Adolescent Academic Program

Reignite your teen’s passion for learning while addressing behavioral challenges with The Plymouth House’s adolescent treatment program, which offers holistic healing and recovery.

Our Adolescent & Teen Academic Program

A teenager’s education should not have to stop because they need treatment. At The Plymouth House, we believe that academic engagement is not separate from recovery — it is part of it. Our adolescent academic program runs alongside clinical treatment, ensuring that your teenager continues to learn, grow, and build toward their future even while they are doing the hard work of healing.

Our dedicated educators work hand in hand with the clinical team to create a learning environment that is responsive to each student’s emotional state and therapeutic progress. This integration creates consistency across all dimensions of your teenager’s experience, reinforcing the coping skills and self-regulation strategies they are developing in therapy while giving them a renewed sense of purpose and accomplishment in the classroom.

Purpose and Importance of Adolescent Education During Substance Use Treatment

The adolescent years are foundational for both personal development and academic growth. When behavioral and mental health challenges arise, education is often one of the first things to suffer. At The Plymouth House, we work to change that by making academic engagement a genuine priority throughout the treatment process.

Supporting Adolescents in Their Recovery

Structure and routine are powerful supports for teenagers in recovery. Having meaningful academic work to engage with each day provides focus and forward momentum, reduces idle time that can increase the risk of relapse, and helps teenagers stay connected to a sense of purpose and future possibility.

Fostering Academic Achievement and Self-Esteem

There is a meaningful relationship between academic success and how teenagers feel about themselves. When a student experiences genuine accomplishment in the classroom, it builds confidence that extends into every other area of their life, including their recovery. The Plymouth House’s academic program is designed to create those moments of success regularly, giving teenagers a tangible sense of what they are capable of.

Our Approach to Supporting Your Child’s Education & Schooling

Education at The Plymouth House is built on collaboration. Our team works closely with you, your teenager, and their home school district to build a coordinated support structure that keeps academic progress on track throughout treatment.

Because residential treatment typically spans 30 to 90 days, teenagers are not attending their regular schools during this time. The Plymouth House provides a dedicated classroom where students engage in our academic program for two hours each day, Monday through Friday, under the guidance of an experienced instructor who monitors learning sessions and supports students as questions arise.

We also develop individualized homeschooling plans that keep teenagers enrolled in the specific courses they were taking before entering treatment. For families who prefer an alternative approach, our academic program offers accessible learning options with credit transfer back to the student’s home school.

Collaboration With Schools & Curriculums

Maintaining a strong and ongoing connection with each teenager’s school is essential to a successful academic experience during treatment. The Plymouth House actively engages with schools, educators, and support teams throughout the process.

  • Align Curriculums: We ensure that our academic offerings correspond with the curriculums used in your school district, so students don’t fall behind and can easily reintegrate post treatment.
  • Share Progress Reports: Regular updates about academic performance and progress during treatment are shared with home schools, ensuring that educators are kept informed.

Tailoring Education to Your Teen’s Treatment Goals

Academic work at The Plymouth House is not generic or disconnected from the therapeutic process. Each student’s learning experience is shaped around their specific treatment goals, creating alignment between what they are working on clinically and what they are engaging with academically.

A teenager focusing on anxiety management, for example, might work on projects that incorporate mindfulness or stress-reduction practices. This integration reinforces therapeutic learning in a different context, helping new skills take root more deeply and naturally.

Experienced Educators

Our educational team brings both instructional expertise and a genuine understanding of adolescent development to every interaction with students.

  • Expertise in Adolescent Development: Our educators are trained to understand the cognitive and emotional development stages of teens.
  • Flexible Teaching Methods: Recognizing that each student learns differently, our educators use diverse teaching strategies to accommodate various learning styles and needs.
  • Compassionate Support: We foster a classroom atmosphere that promotes trust and respect, encouraging students to take academic risks and express themselves freely.

Facilitating the Transition Back to School After Treatment

Returning to a traditional school environment after completing treatment can be one of the more anxiety-producing transitions a teenager faces. The Plymouth House prepares teenagers for this step proactively, working with their home school district to develop a personalized reintegration plan that includes continued support and monitoring.

To support the emotional side of this transition, we provide:

  • Counseling Services: Individual and group counseling to address any anxieties or concerns about returning to school.
  • Peer Support Groups: We create opportunities for students to connect with peers who have had similar experiences, fostering a sense of community and shared understanding.

Individual Learning Plans & Maintaining Academic Progress

Individualized education plans, sometimes called individualized learning plans, are a core component of The Plymouth House’s academic approach. These plans identify each student’s specific educational goals, challenges, and support needs, and they guide the academic experience throughout treatment.

Components of IEPs Include:

  • Assessing the teen’s needs, challenges, and strengths
  • Establishing goals and objectives based on assessment findings
  • Developing individualized strategies to meet educational and recovery goals
  • Providing a flexible curriculum adapted to the teen’s needs
  • Offering support services, such as access to tutors, therapists, and mentors
  • Monitoring progress to track the teen’s academic and recovery achievements
  • Developing a transition plan back to the teen’s school
  • Collaborating with those involved with the teen’s education and recovery
  • Employing a holistic approach by taking into account the emotional and social aspects of their lives as well as their academic needs
