Taking the First Step Safely

Deciding to stop using substances is courageous. But doing it safely is essential. Medical detoxification is the critical first step in recovery—a medically supervised process that helps your body safely clear substances while our experienced team manages withdrawal symptoms and keeps you comfortable.

At Guardian Recovery, we understand that detox can feel overwhelming. You might be worried about withdrawal, unsure what to expect, or hesitant to take this first step. We’re here to tell you: you don’t have to do this alone, and you don’t have to suffer. Our medical detox program provides 24/7 care, proven comfort measures, and compassionate support to help you through this crucial beginning of your recovery journey.

Teen & Adolescent Residential Inpatient Treatment & Rehabilitation

Choosing residential inpatient treatment for your teenager is never an easy decision, but for many families it becomes the turning point that changes everything. This level of care provides an immersive, around-the-clock environment where real healing can take root.

The Plymouth House’s adolescent inpatient program offers a structured and compassionate setting designed to help teenagers do more than manage their symptoms. We work with young people to uncover and address the deeper issues behind their behavior, whether those involve trauma, mental health struggles, family stress, or other contributing factors.

When behavioral challenges like aggression, school refusal, emotional shutdown, or substance use appear, they are rarely the whole story. Our evidence-based, whole-person approach to residential care helps teenagers work through the real sources of their struggles while building the resilience and skills they need to sustain long-term well-being.

If you are ready to explore what residential treatment could mean for your family, reach out to The Plymouth House today. Our team is here to answer your questions and help you take the next step with confidence.

What Is a Residential Inpatient Treatment Program for Adolescents?

Residential inpatient treatment is a level of care in which teenagers live full-time at a treatment facility for the duration of their program. This immersive structure allows for continuous clinical support and a highly organized daily schedule designed to promote behavioral change and emotional growth.

At The Plymouth House, we understand that behavioral challenges, substance use, and mental health concerns are rarely separate issues. They tend to reinforce one another, and our inpatient programs are designed to help teenagers examine all of these dimensions together, developing a more complete understanding of what has been driving their behavior.

Our approach maintains a strong staff-to-client ratio so that each teenager receives genuinely personalized attention. Treatment incorporates individual, group, and family therapy using evidence-based methods including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and motivational interviewing. Holistic therapies such as art and music therapy, yoga, meditation, and mindfulness round out the clinical work, and medication-assisted treatment is available when clinically appropriate.

At The Plymouth House, residential care is designed to support the whole family, not just the teen. We stay in regular contact with parents and guardians, involve families meaningfully through therapy sessions, workshops, and parent support groups, and offer both in-person and virtual options to accommodate families at any distance.

Education remains a priority throughout the residential program. We partner directly with each student’s home school district to protect attendance credits and keep academic progress on track. Our onsite educators provide individualized instruction and support every day, including two dedicated hours of structured academic and physical education activities.

Every teenager who comes to The Plymouth House receives a treatment plan built around their specific physical, emotional, and mental health profile. Before leaving the program, each teen also receives a detailed aftercare plan to guide their transition into a lower level of care, such as our partial hospitalization program or intensive outpatient program, with virtual options available as well.

Who Is Residential Inpatient Treatment Most Suitable for?

Residential treatment is best suited for teenagers who need a deeper level of care and who have either already completed medical detox or do not require it. By living in a structured, supportive environment away from home, teens gain physical and emotional distance from the people, places, and patterns that have been contributing to their struggles. This separation gives many teenagers the mental space they need to begin thinking and behaving differently.

The Plymouth House’s residential program can follow our adolescent detox program or serve as a starting point in the treatment process. It is particularly well suited for teenagers dealing with co-occurring behavioral and mental health concerns, which is why we offer integrated dual diagnosis care as a core part of our residential programming.

What Is the Treatment Process in a Teen Residential Inpatient Program?

Treatment at The Plymouth House begins with a thorough evaluation of your teenager’s medical history, mental health background, and personal circumstances. Our clinical team speaks with both you and your teen to gather a complete picture, which then guides the development of a personalized treatment plan covering the recommended duration, therapeutic approaches, medication considerations, and more.

Day-to-day treatment combines individual, group, and family therapy with academic learning and holistic activities including yoga, meditation, physical movement, and expressive therapies. The goal is always to address the whole person while building practical skills in communication, emotional regulation, and healthy coping that will serve your teen long after they leave our program.

Group therapy creates a structured space for teenagers to connect honestly with peers, navigate conflict constructively, and share both their challenges and their growth. These sessions help teens feel less alone and build a sense of genuine community within the program.

Families follow a parallel path of growth throughout residential treatment. In addition to family therapy sessions with their teenager, parents and guardians can participate in support groups and educational workshops offered in both in-person and virtual formats.

Our Approach to Adolescent Holistic Treatment in a Residential Setting

The Plymouth House’s residential program is grounded in the belief that effective treatment must address every dimension of a teenager’s health. We do not simply manage symptoms. We help teenagers and their families understand what is driving those symptoms and build the tools to address them at their source.

Our inpatient adolescent treatment addresses the following areas through targeted clinical strategies.

  • Physical— Our highly trained medical staff continually assess your teen’s physical health and administer medications as necessary (with your consent). We also offer a balanced nutrition plan, nutritional counseling, and chef-prepared meals, as well as various opportunities for exercise and monitored group outings.
  • Mental and Emotional— Facilitating individual, group, and family therapy, our licensed therapists are trained in various methods, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI), trauma therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, and the 12-Step method. Additionally, we offer dual-diagnosis care (aka co-occurring disorder treatment) for teens who have both substance use and mental health disorders (e.g., anxiety, trauma/PTSD, depression, etc.).
  • Social— To address the social aspects of behavioral health, we offer life skills courses, recreational therapy, and group workshops. Additionally, we foster bonds between our clients, staff, and outside recovery communities.
  • Spiritual— To address the spiritual aspects of treatment, we employ tools such as meditation, mindfulness, and yoga therapy to help participants improve their spiritual well-being.
  • Family— We maintain regular communication with parents and guardians, providing updates on your child’s progress, insights regarding root causes, medication suggestions and updates, and more. Families are an integral part of care, so we offer the tools and techniques to help entire families rebuild relationships, instill trust, and foster growth. Along with psychoeducation and individual and family therapy, we offer family workshops, parent support groups, and more.
  • Academic— Regular communication between our educators and your child’s school ensures your teen maintains academic progress and can seamlessly transition back to school at the completion of formalized care. In addition, our dedicated educators provide personalized attention and critical interventions to help your child regain or maintain good academic standing. In effect, we strive to reignite your child’s passion for learning and set them up for long-term success.

Addressing Mental Health & Co-Occurring Disorders

It is common for mental health disorders, behavioral challenges, and substance use to appear together in adolescents, and when they do, each condition tends to make the others harder to manage. This cycle can escalate quickly without the right kind of integrated support.

Research has shown that teenagers with substance use disorders have significantly higher rates of co-occurring mental health conditions, a pattern referred to as dual diagnosis. There is also evidence that substance use during adolescence can increase vulnerability to mental health disorders later in life, making early intervention especially important.

Adolescents face particular risk during this stage of development because the brain is still maturing. The regions responsible for impulse control and decision-making are among the last to fully develop, which helps explain why teenagers are more susceptible to both mental health challenges and substance use.

The Plymouth House addresses dual diagnosis through a fully integrated treatment model that targets both conditions at the same time. Using evidence-based strategies including cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing, we help teenagers build genuine coping skills and the internal motivation to sustain change. Research consistently supports this concurrent approach as more effective than treating each condition in isolation, and our residential program is designed with that evidence at its foundation.

Do not wait to get your teenager the support they need. Reach out to The Plymouth House today to learn how our dual diagnosis care can be the turning point your family has been looking for.

What to Expect in Residential Treatment

When your teenager arrives at The Plymouth House, they and their family will be welcomed by an intake coordinator who will walk you through the admission process, collect necessary information, and help document your teen’s belongings.

From there, you will have the opportunity to tour the facility, meet key staff members, discuss academic planning, and get a clear overview of what daily life in the program looks like, including individual, group, and family therapy sessions along with wellness activities and structured routines.

Each day follows a consistent schedule that incorporates therapy sessions, meals, academics, and holistic programming. Family involvement is strongly encouraged throughout, including participation in family therapy, parent support groups, and scheduled family workshops.

In addition to this structure, your teenager and your family can expect the following throughout the program.

  • Personalized Care: Teens are assigned a personal counselor to work closely with them, tailoring their therapy and treatment to meet individual needs.
  • Individual Therapy: Facilitated by their personal counselor, individual therapy sessions allow teens to explore personal issues in a confidential, one-on-one setting.
  • Group Sessions: Teens participate in group therapy sessions where they share their experiences and learn from others in similar situations, developing better communication skills and building a support network.
  • Additional Activities: Residential treatment includes activities designed to support recovery, such as art classes, physical exercise, and mindfulness practices.
  • 24/7 Support: The center’s staff is available at any time of the day or night to offer assistance, ensuring your teen’s needs are met around the clock.
  • Healing Environment: Designed specifically for teens, each treatment center is set up to be a safe and nurturing space that promotes healing and wellness.
  • Life Skills Training: Teens learn new coping strategies and life skills that will serve them well during their stay and beyond.
  • Academic Activities: Dedicated educators provide personalized attention and critical interventions to ensure your child gains or retains good academic standing. Plus, we work with your school district to ensure a seamless integration with its curriculum.
  • Family Involvement: In-person and virtual family therapy sessions foster whole-family growth. Plus, workshops and peer groups empower parents and guardians to get the support they need.
  • Aftercare Planning: Based on your child’s needs and progress, your case manager crafts and adjusts an aftercare plan to ensure continued recovery and growth once your child leaves treatment.

The Benefits of Residential Inpatient Treatment for Your Teen

The Plymouth House’s residential adolescent treatment programs provide a plethora of benefits, including:

  • Distance and Immersion—Programs are specifically designed to remove your teen from familiar influences, locations, and patterns that have proven harmful—and to provide a transformative experience to foster well-being today, tomorrow, and always.
  • Safety and Inclusion—Our safe and nurturing environments, which are specifically designed for adolescents, offer healing, a sense of community, and the opportunity for transformational growth.
  • Community Support—Surrounded by peers and professionals well-versed in teenage challenges, teens feel comfortable and supported.
  • Enhanced Recovery—Residential care prepares teens for the next phase of their recovery and wellness journey.
  • Family Support—The teen isn’t the problem, but the family is the solution. As such, families are an integral part of their child’s treatment program at The Plymouth House.

Residential Inpatient Treatment as Part of an Adolescent Continuum of Care

Recovery rarely follows a straight line, and no single treatment approach works for every teenager. At The Plymouth House, we build and continuously adjust treatment plans to reflect each young person’s evolving needs, progress, and goals.

When physical dependence on a substance has developed, treatment typically begins in our medical detox program, where teens receive around-the-clock monitoring and support to ensure their safety and comfort through withdrawal. Once detox is complete, or when it is not needed, teenagers can transition into our residential program, partial hospitalization program, or intensive outpatient program depending on what level of support is most appropriate.

Our continuum of care is intentionally structured to provide a gradual reduction in intensity over time. This gives teenagers the opportunity to build confidence, develop coping strategies, and practice new skills before stepping further into independence. It also gives families the time they need to grow, adjust, and prepare for the next chapter alongside their teen.
