Taking the First Step Safely

Deciding to stop using substances is courageous. But doing it safely is essential. Medical detoxification is the critical first step in recovery—a medically supervised process that helps your body safely clear substances while our experienced team manages withdrawal symptoms and keeps you comfortable.

At Guardian Recovery, we understand that detox can feel overwhelming. You might be worried about withdrawal, unsure what to expect, or hesitant to take this first step. We’re here to tell you: you don’t have to do this alone, and you don’t have to suffer. Our medical detox program provides 24/7 care, proven comfort measures, and compassionate support to help you through this crucial beginning of your recovery journey.

Teen & Adolescent Addiction Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Learn how our tailored intensive outpatient program (IOP) addresses the underlying causes of problematic teen behaviors, emotional concerns, and substance use, promoting long-term recovery and growth.

Teen & Adolescent Substance Use Disorder Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Finding the right treatment for a teenager facing behavioral challenges or substance use can feel overwhelming. Intensive outpatient treatment offers a meaningful middle ground, delivering the clinical depth of more intensive care while preserving the flexibility teenagers and families need to maintain daily life.

At The Plymouth House, our adolescent IOP creates a structured and therapeutic space where teenagers can work through behavioral concerns, build genuine coping skills, and develop the self-awareness needed for lasting change. Every treatment plan is built around the individual teen rather than applied from a template.

Our clinical team looks beyond the visible symptoms of substance use to understand what is driving them. Trauma, untreated mental health conditions, family stress, and environmental pressures all play a role, and our IOP addresses these root causes directly. By helping teenagers and their families understand and work through these underlying factors, we lay the groundwork for recovery that holds.

What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program for Adolescents?

The Plymouth House’s adolescent IOP is a level of care designed to support teenagers while allowing them to remain at home or in a sober living environment, continue attending school, and stay connected to their daily lives. This structure gives teens the opportunity to apply what they are learning in treatment to real situations as they encounter them, with the support of a clinical team close at hand.

For many teenagers, IOP serves as a step-down from a more intensive level of care such as medical detox, residential inpatient treatment, or a partial hospitalization program. For others who do not require those higher levels of support, IOP can function as a primary treatment option from the outset.

How Is an IOP Rehab Program Different From Teen Residential Inpatient Treatment?

An IOP delivers many of the same evidence-based therapies and clinical services available in more intensive programs. Teenagers participate in individual, group, and family therapy and have access to medication-assisted treatment when clinically appropriate. The Plymouth House’s clinical team draws on approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, EMDR, and motivational interviewing throughout the IOP.

The primary distinction is structure. IOP involves fewer weekly sessions and shorter individual session durations than residential or PHP care, giving teenagers more time in their daily environment while still receiving meaningful clinical support. It is designed to bridge the distance between intensive treatment and independent living.

Regardless of the level of care involved, The Plymouth House’s approach is fundamentally holistic. We treat the whole person, not just the presenting symptoms, addressing the intersecting dimensions of behavioral health, substance use, and mental and emotional wellness together. Families are woven into the treatment process through therapy sessions, workshops, and parent support groups, with both in-person and virtual options available.

Treatment at The Plymouth House is individualized by design. Every plan is shaped by a thorough assessment of your teenager’s physical, emotional, and mental health profile, and adjusted continuously as they grow and progress. Before leaving the IOP, each teen receives a comprehensive aftercare plan to support a smooth transition into outpatient or virtual care.

The Benefits of Intensive Outpatient Treatment for Teen Recovery

The Plymouth House’s IOP delivers whole-person care that targets the root causes of behavioral challenges, substance use, and mental health concerns within a program structure that fits into your teenager’s life.

Additional benefits of our IOP for adolescents include:

  • Personal Freedom and Flexibility. The Plymouth House’s IOP is an ideal treatment option for teens that don’t need intensive care, as it allows them to continue to attend school and participate in various personal activities while in treatment. Additionally, teens can return home or to a sober living environment in the evening.
  • Lower Treatment Cost. Since residential inpatient treatment includes room and board, the cost of an IOP program is often considerably less than residential care. At The Plymouth House, we work closely with most major health insurance providers to make all levels of care as accessible as possible.
  • Support Network. Our IOP provides a built-in support system for adolescents. Teens can offer one another peer support and encouragement as they learn to communicate in healthy and effective ways and develop meaningful friendships. Additionally, parents can access family therapy and parent support groups through The Plymouth House.
  • Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) and Psychiatric Services. Our IOP offers psychiatric care services and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) as needed. These FDA-approved medications can significantly decrease the risk of relapse, reduce cravings, and minimize withdrawal symptoms.
  • Dual Diagnosis Care. Mental health and substance use disorders often occur concurrently, a phenomenon known as co-occurring disorders or a dual-diagnosis. Given the complex interrelationship between the disorders, best practice is to treat both conditions at the same time. The Plymouth House offers a host of dual-diagnosis treatment options that promote holistic healing.

What Is the Treatment Process Like in an Intensive Outpatient Program?

Every teenager who enters The Plymouth House’s IOP begins with a thorough evaluation covering their medical history, mental health background, and current circumstances. Our clinical team works with both you and your teenager to gather the information needed to build a personalized treatment plan, addressing the appropriate duration, therapeutic modalities, medication considerations, and more. For teens transitioning from a higher level of care within The Plymouth House, existing assessments and records carry forward seamlessly.

Session schedules typically involve three to five days per week, with sessions lasting several hours each. The Plymouth House offers multiple scheduling tracks including morning, afternoon, and evening options to accommodate different family situations. The overall duration of IOP participation is determined by clinical progress, though most teens remain in the program for 60 days or longer.

Group therapy runs alongside individual sessions, giving teenagers a structured space to connect authentically with peers, navigate interpersonal challenges, and share both their progress and their setbacks. These connections often become an important source of motivation and accountability throughout recovery.

Virtual treatment options are also available within our IOP, providing additional flexibility for families managing demanding schedules.

What to Expect in an IOP for Substance Use Treatment

Along with the aforementioned activities and care, your teen and your family can expect the following from The Plymouth House’s IOP for adolescents:

  • Individual Therapy. Facilitated by their personal counselor, individual therapy sessions allow teens to explore personal issues in a confidential, one-on-one setting.
  • Group Sessions. Teens participate in group therapy sessions where they share their experiences and learn from others in similar situations, developing better communication skills and building a support network.
  • Healing Environment. Designed specifically for teens, each treatment center is set up to be a safe and nurturing space that promotes healing and wellness.
  • Life Skills Training. Teens learn new coping strategies and life skills that will serve them well during their treatment and beyond.
  • Family Involvement. In-person and virtual family therapy sessions foster whole-family growth. Plus, workshops and peer groups empower parents and guardians to get the support they need.
  • Aftercare Planning. Based on your child’s needs and progress, your case manager crafts and adjusts an aftercare plan to ensure continued recovery and growth once your child leaves treatment.

Mental Health Treatment in an Intensive Outpatient Program

Behavioral challenges, mental health conditions, and substance use rarely exist in isolation. In adolescents especially, these dimensions tend to interact and reinforce one another, creating cycles that can be difficult to break without treatment that addresses all of them together.

Research consistently demonstrates a strong connection between substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions in teenagers, including anxiety, depression, and trauma-related disorders. Early substance use also appears to increase the risk of developing mental health problems later in life, underscoring why integrated treatment matters.

The Plymouth House’s IOP is built around the understanding that effective adolescent care must address both mental health and substance use simultaneously. Our clinical team uses evidence-based approaches including CBT and motivational interviewing to help teenagers develop the skills and insight needed for genuine, lasting change. Treating both conditions at the same time consistently produces better outcomes than addressing them separately, and this integrated approach is central to everything we do.

Factors When Choosing IOP Treatment for Your Teen

The most important consideration when selecting an IOP for your teenager is whether the program is genuinely equipped to meet their specific needs. For families transitioning from a higher level of care, continuity with a familiar clinical team can provide meaningful stability during a vulnerable transition period.

Other important considerations include:

  • Is the program licensed and accredited?
  • Does the IOP only address substance use, and does it focus on holistic behavioral care?
  • Are comprehensive evaluations and assessments offered?
  • Does the facility offer various scheduling tracks that are convenient to your family?
  • Do they provide a wide variety of therapies?
  • Are family-focused services available?
  • Is there access to aftercare?
  • Do they offer traditional and holistic therapies?
  • Do they provide mental health treatment for co-occurring disorders?

The Plymouth House’s adolescent IOP meets all of these criteria. As a fully licensed adolescent recovery center, we also hold The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval, the highest level of accreditation available to healthcare providers.

FAQs

How much does an IOP cost, and is it covered by insurance?
Since each treatment program is customized to the unique needs of each teen in our care, no two care plans are alike. As such, costs vary dramatically. Generally speaking, however, the cost of an IOP is significantly less than that of inpatient care, given the added costs of room and board with the latter option. Additionally, we accept most major insurance plans, and both mental health and substance use disorder care are typically covered by insurance.

What happens after IOP?
Effective recovery is fueled by a full continuum of care. Thus, we encourage residential clients to transition to an outpatient or aftercare program following IOP. This might include ongoing therapy, participation in 12-Step groups, and more.

What if my child has underlying medical or mental health conditions?
Trained in behavioral, mental health, and substance use treatment, our care teams plan for and address any physical or mental health conditions that occur alongside substance use. We then integrate any necessary accommodations and medications into your teen’s care plan and provide ongoing communication with you as well as updates to the care plan as necessary.

Will my teen’s privacy be protected?
We go above and beyond HIPAA and health privacy standards to ensure the privacy of our teens and families. If you are concerned about specific privacy requirements, reach out to learn more.

What family support options are available?
We offer a host of family-specific services as your teen progresses through our treatment options. Parents and guardians can participate in family therapy, workshops, educational sessions, and peer support groups.

Can my child still attend school while in treatment?
Yes. One of the main advantages of our teen IOP is that your child can still attend school while in treatment.
